4th Instructors’ Newsletter for 2009- Week of July 27

Get ready for Week 4! This summer at SLSC has certainly been one of a kind. Games have been played, friends have been made and many boats have been sailed! But we’re only 3/8ths of our way through! This has been just the tip of the iceberg – so much more sailing is to be had.

This newsletter will let you know a bit about what has been going on at SLSC and what is coming up this week.

Mids
The Mid Ontario Regatta that SLSC hosted this past weekend was a great success. While the weather may have been mediocre for landlubbers, it was perfect for us sailors. Fairly consistent winds, a well-organized race committee, tireless volunteers, and enthusiastic sailors all combined to make this the best Mids ever! A final congratulations are in order to all sailors, and a huge thanks to all those who donated their time, energy or land for the event! For photos check out www.slsc.ca.  Final results and a full report will be posted shortly.

Civic Holiday Regatta
But fun on the race course isn’t over yet! Racing on the Sturge begins again this Saturday with the Civic Holiday Regatta. For those who are unfamiliar with this event, it is SLSC’s annual local regatta, open to all sailors young and old. The main event takes place Saturday: a big course will be set for 420s (both spin and sans-spin), Lasers, Radials, Bytes and Handicaps (The Handicap class is a class open to all other types of boats that will race against each other and be scored based on a scoring system – so if you have a boat and want to sail it, you’re more than welcome!). Another course will be set for Mosquito racing. All SLSC kids, parents and friends are encouraged to come and race! The Civic regatta can be a great little introduction to racing for young sailors. [Should the weather be un-sail-able on Saturday, Sunday afternoon will be the rain date.]

Civic continues on Sunday afternoon with the infamous Parent Child Race. This is an opportunity for sailors in White Sail 2 and 3 to sail in a fun race with one of their parents (or a good substitute)!

More information and complete details on Civic will be made available later this week. Stay tuned!

Movie Night/Dance
Tuesday is movie night. Two movies will be shown in the Clubhouse: the first suitable for all ages and the second open to 13 year olds and up. The first movie begins at 6:30 and each movie costs a dollar. Please bring a reusable cup for juice.
And of course, Friday is DANCE TIME. The theme this week will be DISCO. Starts at 7 – bring a dollar for admission and another couple bucks for pop/freezies.
The Silvers organize both of these events – so they will provide all the details!!
(Remember, if you have any questions about this you can call the club @ 887-5110)

Wednesday Night Races
Wednesday Night Races continue this week. They have been absolutely gorgeous evening sails so far and have definitely become a highlight of the week. So take a break after club, eat some dinner and then head back at 6 p.m. for some early evening sailing. Experienced and non-experienced racers will be paired up.

Fun Day on Wednesday and Pizza Lunch
This Wednesday is our fourth FUN DAY! This week will be the Poker Run! So put on your poker face, dress up like James Bond and get gambling! The theme for the day is Casino Royal – make sure to come in costume (prizes awarded to best dressed)!
And to top it off: Wednesday is PIZZA LUNCH!!! Make sure your parents pay our wonderful Pizza Lady, Leslie, and enjoy a delicious lunch after sailing on Wednesday.

Water bottles and bring things
Just a reminder: bring a water bottle to Sailing Club because we have a water cooler that you can refill with if needed. Help us help you stay hydrated!
Also, on top of a lifejacket and proper footwear, please bring warm clothing and rain gear if possible – because unless it’s reeeaally bad weather, we’re going sailing! Oh and bring your sunscreen, because summer has arrived!
