SLSC Newsletter: Week 4 2011

We have now reached the middle of summer and our program at the SturgeonLake Sailing Club is in full swing. These past few weeks have been full of sailing, dances, and activities!! And we’re looking forward to many more weeks of fun.

Instructor Update

Kate and Amy are back from four days of racing in Buffalo!

Claire Lourie is fully taking over Owens position as White Sail instructor for the next three weeks while he is in British Columbia.

Dances and Fun Nights

This Tuesday we will be bringing back the classic movie night! Each movie costs a dollar and popcorn and juice will be served. Please bring a reusable cup with your name on it for juice! The first movie will be suitable for all ages and the second movie will only be for kids who are thirteen or older.

This Friday night we’ll be burning down the house with a disco-themed dance so tease that hair into a ‘fro and dust off those bell bottoms!

Fun Day and Pizza Lunch

Why did the banana go to the doctor? Because he wasn’t PEELING well!!! This week’s fun day is Fruit Olympics so get ready for a morning full of fruit-y sailing activities! To show your spirit and earn points for your sugar bowl team come dressed as an athlete! Pizza lunch will he happening right after so don’t forget your $7.50 for 2 slices, lemonade and an ice cream sandwich! Pick up is at 1 (instead of 12:30).

Wednesday Night and Sunday Afternoon Racing

This past Wednesday was another successful evening of racing and s’mores!! Come out this Wednesday to race and enjoy a bonfire or maybe some popsicles if this hot weather keeps up!

This Sunday we held the third afternoon of racing. The last one is taking place on Sunday, August 14th so come out for a chance to win a trophy and some points for you Sugar Bowl team!

Sugar Bowl points are awarded to all sailors that participate in these events!

Adult Clinics

This past Saturday we held our first adult sailing clinic!! We had five eager participants and spent three hours learning and sailing. It was a blast for the instructors, and the sailors walked away with some new sailing knowledge and a great experience out on the water! Our next clinic is being held on Saturday August 13th from 1-4 and costs $75 per person. They are open to anyone 17 and older who is interested in sailing! You can sign up with Leslie Thomas, Kate Thomas, or Ellen Lourie. Hope to see you there!

Sugar Bowl Update

The Wonder Woman Team is still in the lead for the Sugar Bowl, but the rest of the teams are catching up!! Four more weeks to determine the winner!

Things to Bring

As always we are promoting a waste-free sailing club, so we encourage all sailors to bring a REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE to club. We have a water cooler upstairs that all sailors are welcome to use.  Other things that are important to brig every day are a PFD, closed-toe shoes, a bathing suit, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (a little rain doesn’t keep us from sailing!), a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and a snack.

Happy Sailing!

Kate & Ellen J
