SLSC Newsletter: Week 3 2011

Another great week at SLSC has ended which means that another great one is about to start!  Our fingers are crossed for more wind than we got last week! Keep on reading to hear what we have in store for this week!

 Instructor News

There will be a few changes this week to the instructor team. Kate and Amy are leaving on Wednesday afternoon to go to the 420 North Americans at BCC and will be back and ready to teach on Monday morning. Claire Lourie will be joining us this Wednesday to fill in for Owen for the next three weeks when he is out in BC. Don’t say your goodbyes yet though because Owen isn’t leaving till this Sunday. If all goes as planned, this Friday will be our first “Retro Day”, we will be joined by some instructor alumni this Friday to instruct for a day.

 Dances and Fun Night

Our first fun night was a huge success, thanks to the silvers for making it happen! This Tuesday they’re keeping their fun night a secret so stay tuned for details!

Start practicing your hula because this Friday night is the Hawaiian dance! Get out your grass skirts, leis and floral shirts and get ready to listen to all your favourite Beach Boys songs! The dance runs from 7-9pm, it is $1 per person, $1 for pop and 25 cents for freezies. If you have any questions feel free to ask the Silvers. See you there!

 Fun Day and Pizza Lunch

Why didn’t the elephant like to play poker in the jungle? Because there are to many cheetahs! Start practicing your poker face because this Wednesday is poker day!! Get out your shades and dress up as a poker player!

This Wednesday is also Pizza Lunch! Two slices of pizza, lemonade and an ice cream sandwich are $7.50. Pizza arrives at 12:30 and pick up is at 1. You can pay Leslie at registration or bring money Wednesday morning.

Wednesday Night and Sunday Afternoon Races

Our first Wednesday night races were a huge success!! We had 6 boats out racing and everyone had a great time! Congratulations to Jacob, Greyson, and Raeha for coming in 1st overall! The bonfire was a perfect way to end a great night of racing! Come down to the club at 6:30 to rig, and we will assign everyone a boat to sail in. After the races stay for a bonfire and reward your racing with some smores! Sugar bowl points are awarded to everyone who comes out!

Our third day of Sunday afternoon races will be this Sunday the 24th. Come down to the club at 1:00 with or without a crew. The races will be sailed without trapeze or spinnaker so sailors of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to come out!

 Adult Clinics

This summer SLSC will be holding its first ever adult sailing clinics!  Ever wonder what we’re teaching your kids every morning? Come out to our two adult clinics and find out! These clinics are open to anyone 17 and older who are keen to test out their sea legs. The first clinic was originally planned to occur last Saturday but due to extremely light wind conditions they were postponed in the hopes of better conditions this Saturday July 23. The second clinic will happen on Saturday August 13th from 1-4pm and each clinic will be $75 per person. You can sign up with Leslie Thomas, Kate Thomas or Ellen Lourie. Hope to see you there!

 Sugar Bowl Update

The gap between Wonder Woman and the other teams has started to close but Wonder Woman still maintains their lead with an impressive 2,185 points!!

 Things to Bring

As always we’re promoting a waste-free sailing club, so we encourage all sailors to bring their own reusable water bottle to club. We have a water cooler up stairs that we will be sure is always full for sailors to fill their water bottles up with. Other things that are important to bring everyday are a PFD, closed toed shoes, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (a little rain doesn’t keep us from sailing!), a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a snack.

Happy Sailing!

Kate & Ellen 🙂
