SLSC Newsletter: Week 2 2011

The first week was sunny and warm, a perfect way to start off the sailing season! With just one day of no wind, we were able to get lots of sailing in! While we were sailing at Sturgeon, the race team was off sailing in Parry Sound.  Welcome back race team and congrats on a great regatta, and bravo to Megan Thomas for placing first in the Laser Radial Fleet!  We hope you’re ready for another awesome week at SLSC!

Dances and Fun Night

This Tuesday will be our first ever Fun Night!  Instead of watching a movie, come on down to the club at 6:30 for a night for of swimming and water fights. Bring some change for some yummy frozen treats! Don’t forget that PFD’s are required for all swimmers at sailing club.

Its all Greek to us this Friday night! This Friday’s dance theme is TOGA! Get out your favourite bed sheets and show off your toga making skills! The dance runs from 7-9pm, it is $1 per person, $1 for pop and 25 cents for freezies.  If you have any questions feel free to ask the Silvers. See you there!

Fun Day and Pizza Lunch

Knock Knock. Who’s there? You know. You-know-who? Get your wands out because this Wednesday is HARRY POTTER DAY.  Start practicing your spells and dress up as your favourite Harry Potter character.  See you at Hogwarts!

This week pizza lunch is back to its regular day, Wednesday. Two slices of pizza, lemonade and an ice cream sandwich are $7.50. Pizza arrives at 12:30 and pick up is at 1.

Wednesday Night and Sunday Afternoon Races

This Wednesday will be our first night of Wednesday night races! Come down to the club at 6:30 to rig, and we will assign everyone a boat to sail in. After the races, stay for a bonfire and reward your racing with some smores!  Sugar bowl points are awarded to everyone who comes out!

We had our first Sunday afternoon races today, with a enthusiastic fleet of 4 boats.  The wind was perfect for racing and fun was had by all!  Congrats to John Gilchrist and Jacob Webster, who are currently in the lead. Our next set of races is this Sunday the 17th.  Come down to the club at 1:00 with or without a crew. The races will be sailed without trapeze or spinnaker, so sailors of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to come out!

Curriculum Night

This Friday July 15th, we will be holding a curriculum night for parents during the dance.  This a great opportunity for parents to meet their kids’ instructors, get a feel for the program and ask questions. Please join us for refreshments at 7pm while your kids are upstairs dancing the night away!

 Adult Clinics

This summer SLSC will be holding its first ever adult sailing clinics!  Ever wonder what we’re teaching your kids every morning?  Come out to our two adult clinics and find out! These clinics are open to anyone 17 and older who is keen to test out their sea legs. The clinics will be on Saturday July 16 and Saturday August 13th from 1-4pm and will be $75 per person. You can sign up with Leslie Thomas, Kate Thomas or Ellen Lourie. Hope to see you there!

Sugar Bowl Update

After one week of club team Wonder Woman is already in the lead with 1,185 points!! There’s still 7 weeks left, plenty of time for the Hulk,  Spiderman and Batman to catch up!

Things to Bring

As always we’re promoting a waste-free sailing club, so we encourage all sailors to bring their own reusable water bottle to club. We have a water cooler up stairs that we will be sure is always full for sailors to fill their water bottles up with. Other things that are important to bring everyday are a PFD, closed toed shoes, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (a little rain doesn’t keep us from sailing!), a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a snack.

Happy Sailing!

Kate & Ellen 🙂
