SLSC Newsletter: Week 1 2011

Hello, and welcome to another fun filled summer at the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club!!  Its time to put away your pencils and books and dust off your PFDs and dancing shoes because summer 2011 is finally here and it’s going to knock your socks off!  All of the instructors are looking forward to a summer stocked full of dancing, racing, game playing, pizza eating and of course SAILING!

The 2011 Instructor Team

We have an enthusiastic instructor line-up for this summer with both new and returning instructors keen and ready to start teaching!

We are excited to have Amy DesBrisay on board again this summer, leading our race team to a season of fun and success.  Amy has led a successful racing career and has a lot of knowledge to pass on to our young racers, welcome back Amy!

Also returning this summer are Kate Thomas and Ellen Lourie who will be the co-head instructors.  Along with co-head instructing, Kate will be teaching Bronze V and Ellen will be teaching Bronze IV. They are both pumped and excited for an awesome summer!

Heading our Opti/Mosquito program is Keira Webster. Keira has grown up sailing at SLSC and is thrilled to be teaching our youngest sailors this summer!

Kevin McPhee and Owen Thomas will be running our White Sail Program (in the new PICOS!).  They are both seasoned sailors and are enthusiastic to start teaching the sport to keen young sailors!  Claire Lourie will be stepping in for Owen Thomas for three weeks this summer when Owen heads off to a leadership camp in BC.  Claire is also a seasoned SLSC sailor and is eager to work with our ambitious group of White Sails!

Dances and Revamped ‘Movie Nights’

This summer we’ve decided to change things up a little. The traditional Tuesday night movie is being transformed into a variety of fun filled activities. The instructors are teaming up with the Silvers to create these new and exciting events. Stay tuned to hear what we have in store! However, for this coming week we will keep with tradition and have a movie night! As always the first movie is suitable for children of all ages (including younger siblings), and the second movie will be open to kids aged 13 and up. The first movie starts at 6:30 and each movie is a dollar. Don’t forget to bring a reusable cup for juice!
Start practicing your dance moves because this Friday night SLSC will be the place to be to get your groove on. Don’t worry we haven’t changed anything about our famous Friday night dances.  This Friday’s dance theme is pyjama, so get out your favourite PJ’s and rock them on the dance floor (stuffed animals get in for free!). Pop will be sold for a dollar and freezies for 25 cents. See you on the dance floor!

Fun Day and Pizza Lunch

What’s a pirate’s favourite letter? ARRRRRRRR! This week’s fun day is dumping day with a pirate twist. Start practicing your ARRRs and get out your best pirate gear out this Wednesday!

This week pizza lunch will happen on Friday instead of Wednesday since our race team and pizza lady will be in Parry Sound until Friday.  Our fabulous pizza lady Leslie will take orders and money Friday at flag raising.

Wednesday Night & Sunday Afternoon Racing

Weekly Wednesday night races will continue this summer starting the second week of club. Sailors of all levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to come out for some friendly racing! This year we will be adding a fun twist to Wednesday nights, stay tuned for more details!

We will be running four days of racing for the 2011 Sunday Afternoon Race Series. The first one will take place this Sunday July 10th, followed by three more on July 17th and 24th, and August 14th. Come down to the club at 12:30 with or without a crew. The races will be sailed without trapeze or spinnaker so sailors of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to come out!

Regattas

Our race team is heading out to Parry Sound this week for the Big Sound Challenge. Be sure to wish them luck before they leave Monday morning after flag raising!

Curriculum Night

On Friday July 15th we will be holding a curriculum night for parents during the dance.  This a great opportunity for parents to meet their kid’s instructors, get a feel for the program and ask questions. Please join us for refreshments at 7pm while your kids are upstairs dancing the night away!

Adult Clinics

This summer SLSC will be holding its first ever adult sailing clinics!  Ever wonder what we’re teaching your kids every morning? Come out to our two adult clinics and find out! These clinics are open to anyone 17 and older who are keen to test out their sea legs. The clinics will be on Saturday July 16 and Saturday August 13th from 1-4pm and will be $75 per person. You can sign up with Leslie Thomas, Kate Thomas or Ellen Lourie. Hope to see you there!

Things to Bring

As always we’re promoting a waste-free sailing club, so we encourage all sailors to bring their own reusable water bottle to club. We have a water cooler up stairs that we will be sure is always full for sailors to fill their water bottles up with. Other things that are important to bring everyday are a PFD, closed toed shoes, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (a little rain doesn’t keep us from sailing!), a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a snack.

Happy Sailing!
Kate & Ellen 🙂
