SLSC 2025: Chapter 7

Week 7: August 11th-August 15th

We’re coming up to the 7th week of club, and what I’m still trying to wrap my head around, is this heatwave that has felt like it’s lasted the entire summer. I’m not sure where the chilly August weather is, but it sure does not look like it’s catching up to us this week.

I can’t believe we’ve already made it this far into the summer. However, instead of dwelling on that fact, we are going to push it out of our minds and make these two weeks last for as long as possible!

Cottage Club

Congratulations to the 10 sailors that attended cottage club at Stoney Lake (SLYC) this past week! We made up half of the 6 boat Feva fleet, and walked away with a 2nd place (Ronan & Joel) and a 3rd place (Foster & Cameron)!! Can’t think of a better outcome for their first regatta away from Sturgeon.

The 420 Fleet was made up of over 45 boats and was divided into 3 separate fleets, (race team, whitesail & regular spinnaker. We had 2 boats, one in the race team fleet and one in the spinnaker. Despite a few challenges navigating the 45 boats all on the course at the same time, our sailors did an amazing job and persevered through the dead winds that turned heavy in the blink of an eye.

Tuesday Movie Night

Head on down to the sailing club for 6:30 to catch the start of movie night! Our backshed has been really working on their popcorn making skills, so fingers crossed they make it correctly this week! Its 2$ to get in, bring a cup for juice, and some extra change for the candy that will be sold! Pickup is around 8:30!

There is also a second movie for those 13 and older starting around 8:45-9:00. It’s another 2$, and is typically a horror movie, so get ready to be scared!

Wednesday Fun Day

This week is the long anticipated, long awaited, (probably dreaded for our skippers…) Fruit Olympics!!!!

Fruit Olympics may just be the best fun day out there. Have questions about what this funday entails? Don’t worry, here’s a quick run down: think the Olympics but with a twist! All sailors will be divided into teams to compete in several awesome events. Orange passing, apple bobbing, lime swimming, football watermelon style, and of course push a car down the driveway & eat a plate of bananas! Come dressed up as your favourite fruit, or get dressed in some Olympic level attire.

Friday Dance

This Friday is the What Not to Wear dance! When we say what not to wear, we mean it. Wear the weirdest combinations of clothes, things that just do not go together. Think socks & flip flops, stripes and polka dots, cheetah print with floral patterns. You’re basically trying to create the ugliest outfit you can, so get creative. Best outfit–or maybe worst in this case—will win a prize!

The dance starts at 7 and ends at 9, its 2$ to get in and make sure to bring some extra change for candy, pop & freezies that will be sold. Can’t wait to see you all there!!

Sunday Afts

Although we typically aim for 4 Sunday Afts, we will unfortunately only be squeezing in 3 this summer. But 3 is better than 0, so please come down to the sailing club around 1 this Sunday, ready to race away the afternoon. First gun will be at 1:30 and depending on the wind we will aim to get in around 4 races! Bring your own sailboat, or use one of ours! You could win the most massive trophy SLSC has to offer if you participate, so we would love to see you there!

Race Week Trophies

Next week is race week, and I promise to have all the information regarding it in next week’s newsletter. For now, I just want to remind all the past trophy winners to get their names engraved on the trophies, so that you can return them to prizegiving next week ready to go.

Here’s a reminder of the trophies and the winners from 2024:

JD Trophy: Oliver James & Agnes D’Amico

Directors Trophy: Rae Bothwell & Mia Scott

Lou Scholes Trophy: Braden Taylor & Sawyer Hall

Jack Mickey (Sportsmanship): Oliver James

Reminders:

As I mentioned in the beginning of this newsletter, the weather is holding strong with the heat. We might have 2 rainy days on Tuesday and Wednesday, but its not looking like it’ll affect us too much. Remember to bring lots of water, sunscreen, lifejackets, a snack or two, and some rain gear just in case!

We’re looking forward to another awesome week and we can’t wait to see you all there!
