SLSC Newsletter Week 2, 2013

SLSC Newsletter Week 2: July 8th, 2013

Despite a rainy first week of club, the entire instructor team had lots of fun getting to know all the new students and catching up with returning sailors. The Ontario Sailing Team joined us last week. It was a lot of fun to combine the SLSC race team with the provincial sailors and get a chance to work on a variety of new skills and techniques!

Just a friendly reminder to all parents and sailors that the sailing program runs from 8:30am -12:30pm. We ask that sailors do not arrive before 8:30 am as the instructors are busy preparing for the exciting morning ahead and are unable to provide supervision. Thanks for your cooperation!

There are lots of fantastic things in store for the second week of club!

MID-ONTARIO REGATTA

This weekend, July 13th and 14th, SLSC is hosting the Mid-Ontario Regatta for lasers, radials and 420s! Sailors from around the province will be coming to compete along with our own race team. This event is always a lot of fun and a great chance for Sturgeon Point to showcase its hospitality and friendly community. If you are interested in racing, visit the SLSC website and check out the Mids page! While this event is a lot of fun, it is also a lot of work. We are always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, you can talk to either Kate Thomas or Keira Webster. Live updates on the racing will be posted on the SLSC Twitter and Facebook page, so stay tuned! Good luck to all racers participating!

PIZZA LUNCH & FUN DAY

X marks the spot this Wednesday for our annual treasure hunt! Come dressed up in your explorer gear and get ready for an adventurous morning!

There will be Pizza lunch again this Wednesday. For $7.50, you can have two slices of pizza, lemonade and an ice cream sandwich. Pizza arrives at 12:30 so pickup is 1:00pm.  The money for pizza lunch can be given to Leslie at registration on Monday mornings or sailors can bring their money to club on Wednesday morning.

DANCES AND MOVIE NIGHT

This Tuesday will be the first fun night of the season! The fun night will run from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The Race Team will be organizing some games and a raft war for the sailors. The Fun Night costs a dollar. Pop, candy and freezies will also be available from prices ranging between 25 cents to one dollar. Bring a bathing suit, water shoes, and a towel and get ready for a lively night!

The Pyjama dance last week was hopping! I think its safe to say that everyone had a ton of fun dancing to new and old music: from One Direction to the classic Rock Lobster – there was something for everyone. This week’s dance will be ABC at 7:00pm. ABC stands for Anything But Clothing – you can come dressed in costumes made of household items such as garbage bags, newspaper, etc, anything besides clothing! Let your creativity shine! The dance is one dollar and pop and freezies will be sold once again for a dollar and 25 cents. The Race Team has introduced a thrilling summer long point system for costume creativity and dancing enthusiasm! Start polishing those dancing shoes and we’ll see you there!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES

This Wednesday marks our first race night! Come down to the sailing club at 6:30 to participate in evening races with other sailing club sailors! Sailors of all levels are welcomed and encouraged to come out. After sailing, there will be yummy s’mores. Pick up will be 8:30pm.

Unfortunately, our first Sunday Afternoon Races was cancelled due to heavy rain and no wind. Don’t worry; our next afternoon races will be July 28th! Let’s hope for better weather.

DON’T FORGET

In promoting a waste-free sailing club, we ask that all sailors bring a reusable water bottle to club. There will be water available to refill your bottle during the day. As always, don’t forget a PFD, closed toed shoes, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (we sail rain or shine!), sunscreen, a hat, and of course a snack!

Happy Sailing!

Kate and Keira
