Fall CORK Marks End of a Great Season of Racing

This past weekend, members of the SLSC Race Team, instructors and past instructors took to the usually rough waters off Portsmouth Harbour in Kingston for the end of season grand finally Fall CORK regatta.  This year Fall CORK was also Ontario Sailing’s Provincial Championships for Laser, Radial, Club 420, 29er and Optimist classes, capping off the Ontario Sailing 2009 season series.

Well, although the competition was great, the winds were not CORKlike and the weekend turned out to be a lightwind and patchy affair.  In the Club 420 class, the Regatta pitted sailors from Ontario against each other, and others from Nova Scotia and Quebec…and the Maritimers proved that they come from a good seafaring stock by taking the CORK Gold medal  (Adam Taylor and Dan Baker) and the Silver medal (Henry Machum and Andrew Burns).

In the Ontario Championship, it was Adam McDonald and Rhys Cameron of Buffalo Canoe Club taking top honours placing 3rd overall in the Regatta, but top Ontario crew.  They were  followed by our Amy DesBrisay and Kate Thomas who took home the Red Flag as second place Ontario crew (finishing 4th overall).  Will Jones and Kevin Wiersma of Royal Hamilton were third in the Provincials and fifth overall.

Our other sailors were 8th (Evan Burtt and Ellen Lourie), 10th (Adam Arscott and Sam Benson) and 11th (Owen Thomas and Sean Clynch).

Clear from the weary but cheery faces, a weekend regatta early in the school year is a real effort as well as a nice diversion from school work.  The weary part was particularly the case for Kate and Owen, who had to fight the fatigue of a week at camp with virtually no sleep in order to complete the weekend racing.  Good on them…
