2nd INSTRUCTORS’ NEWSLETTER for 2009 – Week of July 13

Despite the cold and the rain, the Summer 2009 Sailing season started with a bang! We had a record 42 sailors for our first flag raising on Monday morning, including 10 Mosquito kids.  Wow!  Six of our Bronze sailors immediately hit the road for a four-day training clinic and regatta held at Sail Parry Sound that ran from Monday afternoon through Thursday.  The rest of us set sail to get rid of the off-season cobwebs. Tuesday movie night was well attended with a good line-up of movies. Fun Day’s pirate theme was a hit – we saw some great costumes and heard some excellent YAARRS!  Wednesday was our first pizza lunch and the launch of our Wednesday Night Races.  Thursday afternoon we had our first outreach program of the season, with about 35 kids from the Lindsay Boys and Girls Club. Thursday night our Bronze V sailors returned with stories of a fabulous regatta and some hardware to boot.  Congratulations to Keira, Claire, Megan, Thom, Jacob and Nick for representing us so well. Friday was the first dance of the season – the infamous pyjama dance – and our first ever curriculum night for parents.  What a busy week!

This week looks to be equally busy.

Movie Night/Dance

Tuesday is movie night. Two movies will be shown in the Clubhouse: the first suitable for all ages and the second open to 13 year olds and up. The first movie begins at 6:30 and each movie costs a dollar. Please bring a reusable cup for juice.
On Thursday night – yes Thursday night this week (the Silvers are off to race in Port Credit on Friday afternoon) – it is time to get our groove going! At 7 o’clock swing by the Clubhouse for a good old SLSC dance. Also costs a dollar. There will be a theme to the dance – this week is the Hawaiian Dance so be sure to remember your leis and grass skirts!
The Silvers organize both of these events – so they will provide all the details!!
(Remember, if you have any questions about this you can call the club @ 887-5110 – assuming Bell Canada has repaired the phone!)

Wednesday Night Races

Wednesday Night Races continue. So take a break after club, eat some dinner and then head back at 6 p.m. for some early evening sailing. Experienced and non-experienced racers will be paired up.

Fun Day on Wednesday and Pizza Lunch

This Wednesday is our second FUN DAY! This week it will be a Treasure Hunt – a great chance practice your sleuthing skills. And to top it off: Wednesday is PIZZA LUNCH!!! Make sure your parents pay our wonderful Pizza Lady, Leslie, and enjoy a delicious lunch after sailing on Wednesday.
Wow, Wednesday is another busy day!

Regattas

This week the Bronze Vs are heading off on Wednesday afternoon for the Steerer’s Regatta in Port Credit. The Silvers will head down to Port Credit on Friday to take over the sailing on the weekend in the Four Sister’s Regatta. Good luck to our racers!

Water bottles and bring things.

Just a reminder: bring a water bottle to Sailing Club because we have a water cooler that you refill with if needed. Help us help you stay hydrated!
Also, on top of a lifejacket and proper footwear, please bring warm clothing and rain gear if possible – because unless it’s reeeaally bad weather, we’re going sailing! And don’t forget sunscreen – summer is surely coming this week!

Sunday Afts

Yesterday we had a successful second Sunday afternoon of races. Congrats to everyone who braved the wind and the waves and to our winners Sam Nyhuus and Kate Thomas. The series will continue on August 9 and 16. Check out the website for more details.

Another busy week!  Happy sailing!
