Well folks, the Canadian Laser Masters Championships hosted by the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club has just been announced by the Canadian Yachting Association as Canadian Regatta of the Year for 2010. The club is going to be feted with other CYA award winners at the CYA gala event at the Carlu in Toronto on February 26th. The official announcement on the CYA website. The criteria upon which we were declared the winners are as follows: CYA City of Kingston Regatta more It is the new year and, in the cold of January, we are starting to plan for the warm (and busy) Summer of 2011. The strength of our program is due in large part to the skills, the enthusiasm, the imagination and the energy of our coaches. We are coincidently looking for skilful, enthusiastic, imaginative and energetic coaches. These job postings now appear on the Ontario Sailing website. For those of you who haven’t participated before, we use 3/4′s of the rink for shinny and 1/4 for pirouettes, little ones and UN observers. On the shinny rink we play 5 minute periods split between younger skaters (roughly 12 and under – birth certificates required) and the rest of the motley more It blows hard in Kingston in the fall – that is Kingston’s reputation – but at last year’s Fall CORK regatta our sailors saw a different Kingston. It was a quiet affair. Little breezes with patches of no wind, sailors searching for puffs, being quiet in the boats so as not to spill any of the wind that was available…Well not this year! This year Kingston was Kingston again and, on Saturday September 25, the winds came hard and it more Claire DesBrisay opened the 2010 Fall College sailing season for the University of Ottawa Gee Gees at the New York Maritime Fall Open. A total of 18 college teams sailed in the regatta, including Columbia, Fordham, US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point), Maryland, Rochester, Georgetown, Cornell, Navy, NY Maritime and Hobart and William. U of O and rival Queen’s were the only Canadian Universities represented. College racing is sailed in Club 420s, with no spinnaker and no trapeze. A college more A bevy of SLSC sailors is racing for their respective University sailing teams this Fall, as Kate Thomas has made the very competitive Queen’s sailing team and may be facing off with Claire DesBrisay and Liz Barr, both of whom will be racing for Ottawa U. Amy DesBrisay and Ellen Lourie have tried out for and made the Dalhousie racing team.
