SLSC Newsletter Week 4, 2013

SLSC Newsletter Week 4: July 22nd, 2013

It has been a busy few days at SLSC this week! We had three different teams head to Toronto to compete in regattas. The Elite Opti Race Squadron took five Optimists to PCYC to compete in the Steerer’s Regatta on Thursday and Friday. The CANsail 4 group took two boats and also competed at the Steerer’s Regatta. Although, there were some heavy winds on Friday, the regatta was an overall success! The teams had a chance to apply racing tactics and become familiar with sailing in large fleets.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Race Team also travelled to PCYC to compete in the Four Sister’s Regatta. The racers competed in a fleet of 64 boats in varying wind conditions providing for a fun and experiential two days!

While sailors were away at the regattas, the club program continued to run as usual! We were happy to see some wind this week despite the hot weather.

NON GALA GALA

This Saturday July 27th, will be the annual Non Gala Gala. We invite all adults and parents to join us at the sailing club’s New Building for a night of appetizers, good conversation and music! All kids are welcome at the dance in the old club-house which will be held on Saturday this week. The festivities commence at 7:00pm. At 8:30pm, there will be dancing in the New Building. Although admission is free, donations are welcomed. The last Non-Gala Gala was a blast! Wee look forward to seeing you there!

FUN DAY

We’re changing a few things for this week’s Fun Day! The Fun Day will be on Thursday this week and we will be going to Verulam! Verulam is an area just east of Sturgeon Point situated on the lakeshore. Sailors will sail over for a morning of games and swimming! Pizza Lunch will take place at Verulam. Bring $7.50 for two slices of pizza, an ice cream sandwich and lemonade! Pickup will be 2:30pm this week.

DANCES AND MOVIE NIGHT

There will be a movie night this Tuesday! The first movie open to all ages will begin at 6:30. Then, the second movie for anyone turning 13 by the end of this year will begin around 8:30pm. Each movie costs a dollar and includes popcorn and juice. Don’t forget to bring a cup!

In light of recent tropical weather, this week’s dance will be Hawaiian themed! Prepare those hula skirts and flowery blouses for a fabulous night. The dance will start at 7:00pm on Saturday. As usual, the dance is one dollar. Pops and freezies will be available for purchase at one dollar and 25 cents.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES

We will be having Wednesday night races again this week at 6:30pm! Sailors of all levels can participate. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three boats and there will be s’mores for everyone at the end of the night! The races will end at 8:30pm.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON RACES

This week will be our second Sunday Afternoon Races! Sailors of all levels and ages should come down to the sailing club at 12:30pm on Sunday. The first race will begin at 1:30pm.

DON’T FORGET
In promoting a waste-free sailing club, we ask that all sailors bring a reusable water bottle to club. There will be water available to refill your bottle during the day. As always, don’t forget a PFD, closed toed shoes, a change of clothes, weather appropriate gear (we sail rain or shine!), sunscreen, a hat and of course a snack!

Stay Afloat!
Tackfully yours,

Kate and Keira
