Day 1 of the Canadian Masters – the Mastery of the Masters

July 23, 2010 – 10:01 pm
Beginning Thursday, Masters sailors began to drift in to Sturgeon Point  They came from across Canada, from the US and one from Northern Ireland,  aged 35 to 76, former Olympians and club sailors, some having sailed all their lives, others more recent converts to the  glorious sport.  They arrived with their ice packs and their stories and their enthusiasm and their laughter. Day 1 of the Canadian Laser Masters Championships was a celebration of the sport and a fine example of what Masters sailing is all about:  two fabulous races in great conditions followed by a fine communal meal, beer, wine and stories at the Club. The day did not start with such promise: overnight and morning rain, a slight wind from the south, the threat of storms by the prognosticators, a skippers meeting at 1 pm, with the rain having stopped but the wind having also abandoned us. Head Instructor Report – Week of July 19

July 18, 2010 – 3:47 pm
Get ready for another great week of sailing! The start of the summer has been a huge success. With 2 weeks already under our belts, the instructors are gearing up for six more awesome weeks on the water. This summer SLSC is clearly the place to be! This past week Ian took 8 sailors from the junior race team to race at Port Credit Yacht Club competing at the Steerers Regatta.  The kids had a great time and did some awesome sailing. Congrats guys on some great racing, and for being great ambassadors for the club. Wednesday’s Treasure Hunt/Harry Potter Day was absolutely magical, and the Tuesday movies were top-notch (although possibly a little scary for Chris); but the summer has just begun! We have a jam-packed week ahead of us to look forward to, on top of one of the biggest weekends of the summer. Here’s what’s up! Masters Regatta This weekend SLSC is hosting  ...

SLSC at Big Sound Challenge Training Week and Regatta

July 14, 2010 – 3:29 pm
Ten SLSC racers, Owen, Mich,  Keira, Emma, Megan, Thom, Jacob, Nick, John and Graham, headed off to the Big Sound Challenge in Parry Sound on Monday morning of the first day of Club, led by coach Evan Burtt and Elite Chaperone Leslie Thomas.  The Big Sound Challenge combines two days of coaching from top coaches (including 'our' Murray McCullough) with 2 days of racing.  Games and events were plannedin between to keep everyone busy and entertained. SLSC sailors came from the farthest distance and had the greatest participation of all the clubs in the event...and the event was fabulous.  Many friends from other clubs were made.  Our guys sailed wonderfully, behaved throughout, represented us well, learned lots, had fun and came home with some hardware.  Evan was the busiest coach there, organizing our gang before racing and  fielding questions from all ten of our sailors between races...and Evan did a great job of ...

We had it all:  a wonderful summer evening, a great turnout of friends, a spectacular setting at the Swanannoa boathouse, Uncle Peter's punch, great nibblies from many nibbly makers, bartenders extraordinaire, many hands making lighter work, many laughs drifting out onto Sturgeon Lake, a long winded toast to Charlie Gray and Kerry MacMillan with a little of our history thrown in, some of those history makers in attendance and a Christening of Merry Mary, the newest addition to our growing fleet of Opties for the little guys, named for our merry former commodore Mary Prendergast. Thanks to all of you who attended and who contributed to making it such a great evening.  And thanks also to the organizers and workers, of which there were many, under the guidance and direction of overall skipper Leslie Thomas.  And finally thanks to all of you who donated so generously to the Club.  I hope you all have a ...

Canadian Laser Masters Championships: A Primer

July 1, 2010 – 1:40 pm
On July 22, 2010, Masters sailors from Canada and the US will be coming to Sturgeon Point to sail in the Canadian Laser Masters Championships.  This is going to be a great event, sailed in one of the greatest sailing dinghies ever designed, with Canadian involvement to boot. The first ever Laser was launched by Bruce Kirby, the Canadian born Olympic Finn sailor and dinghy designer along with another Finn sailor, sailmaker and Olympic medallist Hans Fogh and boat builder Ian Bruce.  The launch took place at the Playboy Club on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin in 1970.  The trio never imagined that now, 40 years on, the Laser would be an Olympic class boat and the number of Lasers would be closing in on 200,000 in more than a hundred countries around the world. The Laser was introduced to Sturgeon by David and Penny Barr in 1972.  They brought the first Lasers to Sturgeon and ...
