SLSC 2017: Chapter 5

Sunday Afternoon Races

We had gusty, shifty, and fun conditions for the second installment of the Sunday Afternoon Race Series, and had a great turnout.   We sailed three races in both the 420 and the Laser fleets. Kate and Amy won the six-boat 420 fleet #BeenThereDoneThat, although the former youth national champions were bested in one race by Jack and Matthew #TheyDidWhat?? Honourable mention to our youngest sailor and WetFoot superstar, Cole Carter, who with Isabella and Trinity bravely faced big winds in his first sail in a 420.

The growing Laser fleet had 5 boats, with Richard Farr winning the day with two firsts and a second. After years of sailing a leaky old boat that wouldn’t float, he is shocking the Sturgeon Laser establishment with his newfound speed #SoFarrSoGood #WhoKnewFloatingWasFast?

420 North Americans

Maija Rix and Margaret Wilkins competed in the 420 North American Championships this past week. Despite missing two races due to illness, they still managed to finish as the top Canadian junior team!

Tuesday Movie Night

First movie starts at 6 and ends at approximately 7:45. Your $1, entrance fee includes a glass of juice (bring a reusable cup), popcorn, and a (somewhat) comfortable seat in the upstairs of the new building. Candy will be sold. If you are turning 13 by December 31st this year (and agree to pay another dollar), you are eligible to stay for a second movie.

Wednesday Fun Day: Fruit Olympics

The biggest sporting event of the summer will take place this Wednesday! Our sailors have been training for years for this great pentathlon, and although we don’t allow fans to stay and watch, the action will be documented on camera. A note to competitors: remember to plan to eat complex carbohydrate foods with a low glycaemic index in the week leading up to this contest, and get plenty of sleep; how you place this Wednesday may jumpstart your athletic career.

A well-deserved pizza lunch will be served to all those who are physically able to eat following the legendary banana event.

Wednesday Night: Bonfire

Due to the rain last Wednesday, the Silvers will be hosting last week’s bonfire this week. It runs from 7 to 9, costs $4.99 at the door, and includes two hotdogs and a s’more. Candy and pop will be sold separately.

Friday Dance: Disco

This Friday is the Disco dance! Starts at 7 and ends at 9. There are prizes for best costume, so be sure to check in with your parents about proper disco attire #EvenOlderThanMeagan. Entrance costs $1 and snacks will be sold.

Civic Weekend

This Saturday, we will be hosting our annual Civic Holiday Regatta. Community members and club-goers are all welcome to come down for some racing! Registration starts at 9 and costs $5. Skippers’ meeting is at 10 and we are aiming to get our first race off by 11. Lunches will be available for purchase at the registration table (also $5), or sailors can bring their own. Boats are assigned on a first come first serve basis, with priority going to junior club registrants.

Sunday evening, starting at 6, there will be a prizegiving dinner at Rosehill (7 Henry St., Sturgeon Point). Dinner costs $5 for junior sailors, and $10 for everyone else!

Salvation Army Food Drive

Finally, we will be distributing bags for the Salvation Army Food Drive this week! Donations can be dropped off outside the church on Sunday morning before the service August 6th or Monday, August 7th at the running races.

Lots of love,

Adele
